Trader questions

Is the forex market closed on weekends and Saturdays?

The short answer

Yes. The forex market is closed on Saturdays and most of Sunday. Trading runs about five and a half days a week, from Sunday's open in Asia until Friday's close in New York, according to Nasdaq and CME Group's FX futures schedule.

When forex is open and closed

Nasdaq describes the forex market as operating 24 hours per day, five and a half days per week. The trading day starts in Australia, moves to Europe and ends in North America.

CME Group lists its FX futures hours as Sunday to Friday, 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central time, with a 60-minute break each day beginning at 4:00 p.m. Central time. That break is 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. New York time, according to CME Group.

What happens on Saturday

Saturday falls inside the weekend gap, so spot forex does not trade. CME Group's separate 24/7 schedule applies only to specific contracts such as cryptocurrency futures and options and certain metals futures, not to FX futures.

CME Group notes that weekend trading from Friday evening through Sunday evening carries a trade date of the following business day, with clearing and settlement processed then.

The daily break, not just the weekend

CME Group states that during the 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. New York hour, listed FX futures do not trade, while most retail FX and CFD platforms continue to quote. It adds that for roughly one hour there is no listed FX price at all.
