Trader questions

Is the forex market open on weekends (Saturday and Sunday)?

The short answer

No. The forex market is closed on Saturday and Sunday. According to CME Group, FX futures trade from Sunday 5:00 p.m. to Friday 4:00 p.m. Central time, with a 60-minute break each day beginning at 4:00 p.m. Central time.

When the forex week starts and ends

CME Group, which runs the largest regulated FX marketplace, lists its FX futures hours as Sunday to Friday, 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central time, with a 60-minute break each day beginning at 4:00 p.m. Central time.

That means the week opens Sunday evening and closes Friday afternoon in US Central time. Saturday and Sunday daytime are outside those hours.

The daily break

CME Group states that listed FX futures do not trade during a 60-minute maintenance break each day from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central time, which is 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. New York time.

According to CME Group, most retail FX and CFD platforms continue to quote during that hour, but there is no listed FX price at all for roughly that hour.

Weekend and holiday trading dates

For CME Group's 24/7 contracts, the exchange says all holiday or weekend trading from Friday evening through Sunday evening has a trade date of the following business day, with clearing, settlement and regulatory reporting processed the following business day.

That note covers the 24/7 contracts CME Group lists (cryptocurrency futures and options, plus 1-Ounce Gold futures), not standard FX pairs.
