Trader questions

Is the US bond market closed the day after Thanksgiving?

The short answer

No. The US bond market is open the day after Thanksgiving, but it closes early at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, according to SIFMA's recommended holiday schedule for US dollar-denominated fixed income securities.

What SIFMA recommends

SIFMA recommends a full market close on Thanksgiving Day and an early close at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time the following day for trading of US dollar-denominated government securities, mortgage- and asset-backed securities, over-the-counter investment-grade and high-yield corporate bonds, municipal bonds, and secondary money market trading in bankers' acceptances, commercial paper and Yankee and Euro certificates of deposit.

SIFMA states that its early and full market close recommendations are recommendations only, and each member firm decides for itself whether its fixed income departments remain open for trading. SIFMA also states that early close recommendations do not affect the closing time for settlements.

The 2026 dates

According to SIFMA's holiday schedule, Thanksgiving Day 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26, and the early close is Friday, November 27, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

For comparison, the NYSE lists Thanksgiving Day 2026 as Thursday, November 26 and an early close at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, November 27, 2026 for its markets. That is the stock exchange schedule, not the bond market schedule.

What this does not cover

The sources above do not state whether every individual bond dealer or trading desk stays open. SIFMA's schedule is a recommendation, so actual desk hours are set by each firm.
