Trader questions

Is the forex market open on Christmas, New Year and the surrounding days?

The short answer

The sources here do not give a full forex trading-hours schedule for these dates. They show Christmas Day and New Year's Day as bank holidays for most currencies, with CME Clearing still open to clear trades on 25 December 2026.

Christmas Day

According to CME Clearing's advisory for Christmas 2026, 25 December 2026 is the observance of Christmas Day and settlement banks are closed. CME Clearing itself is open to clear trades that day. For all currencies except Japanese Yen it clears trades for the next good clearing business day; Japanese Yen is a normal business day.

The NYSE calendar lists Christmas Day as an exchange holiday, with an early close at 1:00 p.m. Eastern on 24 December 2026.

New Year's Day

CME Clearing's New Year's table lists Friday 1 January 2027 as a bank holiday for the currencies it covers, and states that on that date it will not produce its normal intra-day or end-of-day reporting. The NYSE calendar lists New Year's Day as an exchange holiday.

For trades dated 1 January 2027, CME Clearing gives Monday 4 January as the clear date for USD, CAD, EUR, GBP and MXN.

Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and Boxing Day

CME Clearing's tables list Thursday 24 December 2026 and Thursday 31 December 2026 as close-of-business dates. The NYSE closes early at 1:00 p.m. Eastern on 24 December 2026.

CME Clearing lists Boxing Day, 28 December 2026, as a bank holiday for GBP, AUD and NZD, so settlement for those currencies moves to Tuesday 29 December. The sources do not state forex trading hours for 2 January, so this page does not state them.
