Does FTMO allow news trading, and what are the rules?
By the Kairotick team. Updated .
The short answer
Yes during the FTMO Challenge and Verification. On a funded Standard FTMO Account, order execution is restricted from 2 minutes before to 2 minutes after a release on FTMO's restricted list. Swing accounts have no news restriction. FTMO Futures allows news trading in any phase.
What FTMO says about news trading
FTMO's FAQ page "Can I trade news?" states that FTMO restricts order execution for 2 minutes before a release on its restricted list. The same page covers the FTMO Challenge and Verification and the funded FTMO Account.
FTMO's Forbidden Trading Practices page lists gap trading as a forbidden practice: opening simulated trades when major global news, macroeconomic events, or corporate reports or earnings are scheduled and might affect the relevant financial market, or two hours or less before a relevant financial market closes for at least two hours.
Challenge and Verification
According to FTMO's FAQ, news trading is allowed during the FTMO Challenge and Verification. The 2-minute restriction applies to the funded FTMO Account, not to the evaluation phases.
Funded Standard and Swing accounts
On a funded Standard FTMO Account, FTMO restricts order execution from 2 minutes before to 2 minutes after a release on FTMO's restricted list. FTMO's FAQ says this covers opening and closing trades, including stop loss and take profit fills, on the targeted instruments.
FTMO's FAQ for Australian clients says the FTMO Account Swing offers no restrictions on news trading or holding trades over the weekend, provided the trader does not engage in any Forbidden Trading Practices. Australian clients who qualify as Professional traders become eligible for the FTMO Account with 1:100 leverage, where news and weekend trading restrictions apply.
FTMO Futures
FTMO's Futures FAQ page "Can I trade news?" states that news trading is allowed with FTMO Futures during any phase, with no special news restrictions, provided the trader does not engage in any Forbidden Trading Practices.
What happens if the rule is broken
FTMO's FAQ says that breaking the news restriction may result in termination of the FTMO Account. The exact restricted-event list and the instruments it covers are published by FTMO; the pages read for this page do not list them.
